The Breakdown of Microscopic Time Reversal Invariance and the Cathedral Builders' Paradigm.

Abstract

Everyday life exhibits many apparaent violations of Time Reversal Invariance (=T). However a careful distinction has to made between macroscopic and microscopic violations. Also the latter has been observed. I briefly describe the fundamental significance of this observation and summarize the present experimental information from particle physics. The relation from T violation to CP violation and its implementation in fundamental theories is sketched. There is compelling reason to expect that the decays of beauty mesons will reveal huge CP and T asymmetries. (I believe by this fall the BELLE/BABAR data will have shown that!) The basic elements of the experimental and theoretical program are outlined for exploiting this unique discovery potential.
