The NEW CERN Facility Providing a Neutrino Beam

at Gran Sasso (CNGS)

Abstract

A Joint Technical Study Group of CERN and INFN has made a conceptual design of a facility

providing a muon neutrino beam directed from CERN to Gran Sasso. The CERN Council has

approved this new facility in December 1999.

The layout of this facility at CERN and the production of the muon neutrinos with the 400

GeV protons from the CERN Supersynchrotron will be described. The performance of the

facility will be discussed which is optimized for the search for the oscillation of the muon

neutrinos into tau neutrinos. The time schedule for this project foresees operation in 2005.
