Ultra-low energy Antiprotons and Antihydrogen.
Abstract With the recent commissioning of the new low energy antiproton source at CERN, the Antiproton Decelerator (AD), we can look forward to a new generation of experiments with ultra-low energy antiprotons. Some of these will include comparisons of proton and antiproton properties, the formation of, and experimentation with, metastable antiprotonic atoms and the formation of ultra-cold antihydrogen. We will describe how antiprotons are captured and cooled to low energies and the motivation for performing some of the experiments described above. The discussion will then focus on the formation of cold antihydrogen and will include a description of the production and accumulation of cold positrons and how the positrons and antiprotons may be brought together in a controlled fashion. Prospects for experimentation with the cold antihydrogen will be described, including possibilities for spectroscopy on the trapped antiatoms.
