The Auger project for the study of the
very high energy cosmic rays

Abstract

The aim of the Auger project is the study of the cosmic radiation spectrum in the region of the highest observed energies, that is 10**20 eV and beyond. This region of is of particular interest for the study of the interactions of cosmic rays  with the electromagnetic background radiation.

The project foresees the construction of two Observatories; one in the South Earth Hemisphere and the second in the North one.

The project of the South Observatory has already been completed and it is under construction  near the city of Malargue in Argentina. The Observatory has a wide acceptance and uses an hybrid technique by combining an  array of detectors distributed over a wide area with a system of telescopes devoted to observe the atmospheric fluorescence.

Recently the first events have been observed.
